Eyes of the Ancestors

The Arts of Island Southeast Asia at the Dallas Museum of Art

by Reimar Schefold and Steven G. Alpert

The Dallas Museum of Art’s collection of masterpieces from Island Southeast Asia and Indonesia is world famous, and rightly so. Eyes of the Ancestors does this incredible collection justice, with fantastic full page colour photographs by Brad Flowers and important essays which expand on the anthropological and cultural significance of these powerful and beautiful objects.

This is probably the most important art book on the Islands of Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Its a very good introduction to the arts of the region that have generally been neglected compared to the other Oceanic art regions, and is sure to entice the reader to explore these arts even further

Eyes of the Ancestors was the winner of the International Tribal Art Book Prize (PILAT) in 2013.
