Of Kings and Commoners
by Kwazulu Cultural Museum
Paperback | 216 pages | English
This is a very hard to find book (with a second hand price tag to march unfortunately). It consists of various Zulu artefacts in the collections of the Kwazulu-Natal Cultural Museum, including carvings, metalwork, pottery and beadwork.
Each section is preceded by a useful essay, the section on metalwork is especially informative as this sacred and ritualistic practice is not really covered by the other Southern African art books
This was one of the very first modern books on Zulu material culture, and as such the many photos are not up to the standard of later books like the Art of Southeast Africa or Zulu Tribal Art. The descriptions and essays however, are excellent and informative and this would make a useful addition to any serious Southern African art collectors reference library.
